Teltow, 1 October 2009. In an independent study*, the two Somatex systems “Bone-Marrow” (8 G) and “Safe-Cut” (8 G) were the only ones out of eight tested instruments to receive an overall score of “excellent”.
In this experimental study carried out by University Hopsital Freiburg (Germany), eight bone biopsy systems from different manufacturers were compared. The criteria under investigation were effort, ergonomics, stability, removal of the cylinder, the histopathological quality of the sample and the number of required biopsy attempts. Unlike in previous studies, not just one type of bone was tested, but rather three different types of varying degrees of hardness. The study was headed by Professor Markus Uhl of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg.
In all categories, the two Somatex biopsy systems “Bone Marrow” and “Safe-Cut” achieved the best results. The two Somatex cannulas significantly stand out from the competition through very good handling properties, very low artefact interference due to cracks and easy removal of the cylinder.
In particular, this means:
Ergonomics: high level of comfort and very good power transmission
Stability of the needle: very stable
Cylinder removal: very easy
Number of required biopsies: 1 attempt
Artefact interference due to cracks: very low
Histopathological quality: very good
A great number of different bone biopsy systems is available worldwide. The various systems often significantly differ with regard to handling properties and the quality of the obtained preparation. An analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the various systems is designed to facilitate the decision process for the user, to increase diagnostic accuracy and to spare patients the stresses of additional biopsies.
