World premiere of the new generation of products for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Dear readers

The first quarter of the year is behind us, it is now spring and we are enjoying the first rays of sunshine after a long winter. SOMATEX has just completed a very successful first quarter of 2008. The OEM division, established in 2005, has contributed to a sales growth of 14 percent compared to the previous year. Vertebroplasty and mammography products have made significant contributions to our success.

The SOMATEX GmbH development department is working in top gear to continue our successful first quarter. We will be presenting our latest innovations at the 89th German Roentgen Congress in Berlin. The focus of the Congress will be on the world premiere of the new range of MR products. The real new product here is the MR material, the perfect compromise of optimum visibility, very good artefact formation and maximum material strength.

Find out about this and other innovations in our latest newsletter.

Enjoy your reading and we look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

The SOMATEX Team

MRI Devices - Optimal visibility and maximum strength

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a future oriented imaging procedure in modern diagnostics
and minimal invasive therapy. SOMATEX has been active for years in the development of instruments made from nonmagnetic material for different applications. In accordance with the high demands and new developments in MRI, our products are continually improved or newly designed.

The new SOMATEX MRI Instruments series seeks to find the optimal balance of MRI visibility, artefact management, and material strength. Thanks to special design and the use of new high quality materials, SOMATEX is setting standards in the MRI sector: Minimum artefacts, optimal visibility, andhigh strength make SOMATEX MRI Instruments safe and reliable instruments.

All MRI-Devices at a Glance:

MRI Chiba Needle with a particularly sharp ULTRA cut for the injection of drugs or for fine needle aspiration biopsies.

MRI Coaxial Puncture Needle with a sharp trocar tip for the absolute minimum of puncture trauma. The needles can, for example, be used for the initial puncture or as sheaths for guidewires, but also as puncture sheaths for the SOMATEX Biopsy Handy.

MRI Biopsy-Handy for obtaining histologically usable tissue material from a variety of soft tissues and organs.

MRI Tumark Professional for precise tissue marking under the guidance of MR. The new 3D marker design guarantees firm anchorage in the tissue with optimal visibility in all positions.

Tumark Professional and MRI Tumark Professional are avaliable in two different lengths: 18G/ 1,20 mm x 120 mm and 18G/ 1,20 mm x 150 mm

MRI Tuloc Localization System for the pre-operative marking of suspicious tissue. Its high pressure stability and extreme sharpness of cannulae and wire tips render possible the simple penetration even of solid tumour tissue.

MRI DUO-System is a correctable localization set for the pre-operative marking of non-palpable, suspected mammary lesions.

High rigidity and stability of the cannula becaus of the new MRI material. Therefore  the MRI DUO-System is available only in one size of the diameter 20G / 0,95 mm and in three different lengths (50 mm, 90 mm, 120 mm).

The advantages of using bone cement injection systems
(author: Thammo Weise)

The aspects of vertebroplasty of most importance to patients are major pain reduction and low complication incidence. These factors are amongst those responsible for the widespread adoption of the procedure in only a few years. However, it is increasingly the case that cost-conscious users are choosing to carry out the augmentation process with simple instruments not intended for the purpose, such as punction cannulas for bone marrow biopsies or unsuitable 1-3 ml syringes. Even bone cements with mechanical properties that fail to meet the prescribed standards are now available at the low cost. The mounting pressure on costs is leading to disregard of the crucial aspect - the safety on the patient.

Radiation Protection - CT-Eye ProteX and CT-Gland ProteX

Eye lenses and thyroids are among the organs most sensitive to radiation. Ionising radiation can make eye lenses more opaque and, at higher doses, even lead to radiation cataracts. In particular for children, CT examinations in the skull area pose an increased risk for the eye lenses and thyroid glands. During skull CT examinations, the protection of both of these organs is therefore highly recommendable.

SOMATEX developed a new radiation shield that has significantly less radiation exposure compared to former protectors, all the while maintaining the quality of the diagnostic image. The increased protection is made possible by the innovative combination of different metallic components. To protect the enviroment as well as human health, SOMATEX designed the new shield without any lead. The two new SOMATEX products - CT-Eye ProteX and CT-Gland ProteX - are setting standards for active radiation protection for patients.

CT-Eye ProteX

    CT-Eye ProteX

The CT-Eye ProteX offers safe protection for the most radiation sensitive organ - the eye lens. The thin and flexible shield is placed and fixed over the eyes right above the nose.

CT-Gland ProteX

    CT-Gland ProteX

CT-Gland ProteX - for maximum radiation protection of the sensitive thyroid glands. By means of a fixation strip, the shield is held in place even for patients having breathing or swallowing difficulties.
