The advantages of using bone cement injection systems
(author: Thammo Weise)

The aspects of vertebroplasty of most importance to patients are major pain reduction and low complication incidence. These factors are amongst those responsible for the widespread adoption of the procedure in only a few years. However, it is increasingly the case that cost-conscious users are choosing to carry out the augmentation process with simple instruments not intended for the purpose, such as punction cannulas for bone marrow biopsies or unsuitable 1-3 ml syringes. Even bone cements with mechanical properties that fail to meet the prescribed standards are now available at the low cost. The mounting pressure on costs is leading to disregard of the crucial aspect - the safety on the patient.

Keen interest in SOMATEX products in the Gulf States

In January, SOMATEX made its first appearance at Arab Health in Dubai. Arab Health is one of the most largest and most important medical technology trade fairs in the world. 2.189 exhibitiors from 64 nations exhibited their products and services. With a total of 399 exhibitors, Germany had by far the most of any one nation.

For some time now, SOMATEX has been hard at work developing its international business. Arab Health was a significant first step in the plan to drive forward our activities on the world stage. "The fair was a great success for us." confirms Markéta Kniep, Manager International Operations at Somatex. "With over 50 contacts from the Gulf Region, as well as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and some African countries, we have been able to secure a firm foothold enabling us to extend and develop business relations in the Arab world."

Radiation Protection - CT-Eye ProteX and CT-Gland ProteX

Eye lenses and thyroids are among the organs most sensitive to radiation. Ionising radiation can make eye lenses more opaque and, at higher doses, even lead to radiation cataracts. In particular for children, CT examinations in the skull area pose an increased risk for the eye lenses and thyroid glands. During skull CT examinations, the protection of both of these organs is therefore highly recommendable.

SOMATEX developed a new radiation shield that has significantly less radiation exposure compared to former protectors, all the while maintaining the quality of the diagnostic image. The increased protection is made possible by the innovative combination of different metallic components. To protect the enviroment as well as human health, SOMATEX designed the new shield without any lead. The two new SOMATEX products - CT-Eye ProteX and CT-Gland ProteX - are setting standards for active radiation protection for patients.

CT-Eye ProteX

    CT-Eye ProteX

The CT-Eye ProteX offers safe protection for the most radiation sensitive organ - the eye lens. The thin and flexible shield is placed and fixed over the eyes right above the nose.

CT-Gland ProteX

    CT-Gland ProteX

CT-Gland ProteX - for maximum radiation protection of the sensitive thyroid glands. By means of a fixation strip, the shield is held in place even for patients having breathing or swallowing difficulties.
