One And A Half Decades Of Innovation

In the past few weeks Somatex has celebrated a special anniversary: Somatex Medical Technologies GmbH has reached 15 successful years in the market. In looking back, we see a rocky, stepp path, but also recognition and success. Knowing what we can achieve, we do not bask in the past, but rather direct our full attention to the future. New methods, new products, continous innovation - this is the philosophy that governs all that we do.

New products are the focus ot this year´s Medica in Düsseldorf, Germany, as well. We do not want to spoil the suspense, so we will keep quiet until the day in question. However, this much may be revealed: There will be innovations in the areas of radiation protection for the patient, the drainage product group and Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA).

We would like to invite you! Please visit us at Medica between

14th November and 17th November 2007 at

Booth D55 in Hall 16

and find out further details!

We look forward to your visit. Until then, we wish you enjoyable reading!

Vertebroplasty versus Kyphoplasty
(author: Thammo Weise)

Both minimal invasive procedures are undisputedly methods which because of their effective pain reduction have revolutionised the therapeutic concept for osteoporosis related vertebral compression fractures. Besides the purely pecuniary fact that Kyphoplasty instruments cost five to ten times as much as those for Vertebroplasty, there are several other aspects which also deserve close consideration:The rate of straightening of kyphosis into the approximately pre-fracture form originally propagated by Kyphon has been put into perspective by numerous studies. In many cases involving recent fracture (6-8 weeks) straightening is possible, but offen by only a few millimetres or degrees depending on the age of the fracture. However, it has now also been found that hyperlordotic positioning alone also makes it possible for Vertebroplasty to reduce the angle of kyphosis by two to three degrees. Since this fact is not attributed primarily to Vertebroplasty as a pure pain therapy, however, in most cases no attention at all is paid to measuring the change in the angle of kyphosis pre- and postoperatively.

Lung Marker System - extending the scope of VATS* :

The Somatex Lung Marker System is used for the CT-guided marking of nonvisible round foci near the pleura before VATS. Clinical experience with the spiral wire marking system has shown that pre-operative marking of pulmonary foci may be a significant factor in the reliable tracing and identification of the tissue requiring resection. Problems in tracing round foci near the pleura constitute a significant limitation in the scope of VATS and often necessitate a switch from thoracoscopy to thoracotomy. The use of wire markers specially developed for lung parenchyma extends the scope of apllication of VATS and so constitutes a major step towards lower impact, minimally invasive interventions.

Percutaneous CT-guided punction is a widely-used and reliable method. By using high-tech material, the wire system can be located very close to the round focus because it uses a needle with only 18-Gauge thickness. The spiral form of the marker gives the wire the best possible anchoring characteristics given the softness of lung tissue. If the wire is located in the wrong place it can be recovered with the cannula still in position, released and replaced in the correct location.
