Study confirms: ”Safe-Cut®” from SOMATEX® considerably improves handling in bone marrow punctures and quality of the biopsy material obtained.
Teltow, May 26, 2005. Bone marrow punctures are indispensable for diagnosing numerous hematological and oncological diseases. Due to the patient’s enormous stress and the risk of infection it is very important that the first attempt of puncture already yields enough bone marrow material in sufficient quality.
According to a study carried out by ArtiMed Medical Consulting, there are clear advantages of new puncture systems compared to the standard puncture systems. Based on clinical routine studies, a total of 60 bone marrow punctures at the iliac crest were evaluated. In 31 cases the physicians used the Safe-Cut system from SOMATEX® Medical Technologies and in 29 cases the TrapLok® system from InterV.
Both puncture systems led to a considerably reduced traumatization of the patients. The quantity of obtained biopsy material was considered as sufficient with both systems as well. With regard to the effort required to penetrate the bone crest, however, the study stated a “considerable advantage of the Safe-Cut system compared to the TrapLok system.”
The pathologists, too, achieved good results with both Safe-Cut and TrapLok. As to the quality of the biopsy material, the authors of the study come to the following conclusion: ”Summarizing we can say that both systems have advantages compared with standard puncture systems when looking at the biopsy material’s quality. These advantages are more obvious when using the Safe-Cut system since the pathologist's examinations have not been impaired in any case.”
Information about Safe-Cut
Safe-Cut is a new system allowing the puncture and aspiration of histological tissue from the iliac crest. The puncture system is characterized by its special LOCK-WIRE technology that ensures a 100% retention of the biopsy material in the canula and an optimal protection of the specimen and care of the patient.
