SOMATEX® presents new Tumark® system at German Radiology Congress
Teltow, April 29, 2005. To efficiently treat tumors using chemo or radiation therapy, it is very useful to be able to precisely mark the affected tissue. At the German Radiol-ogy Congress taking place in Berlin from May 4 – 7, SOMATEX® Medical Technologies will present a new minimally invasive system to mark soft tissue, in particular breast tissue.

Essential element of the Tumark® marker system is a 6mm nickel-titanium marker to be inserted percutaneously into the target area using a special aspirating set. Its specific form (patent pending) allows firm anchorage and increases visibility in all po-sitions. Tumark® is primarily used to mark lesions prior to and during chemotherapy and to improve therapy planning prior to radiotherapy. Due to clear localisation, the tissue concerned can be precisely marked and healthy tissue areas are not affected. During follow-up examinations the tumor’s initial position can still be found. In addition to that, the marker system is able to optimally mark locations for a biopsy specimen, especially in the case of small, non-palpable focuses.
Tumark® can be used in connection with ultrasound, x-ray and magnet resonance imaging (MRI). The marker itself is MRI compatible up to 3 teslas. SOMATEX® offers a special aspirating set for usage in MRI examinations.
